Why do we re-present the world to ourselves?
What forms do these representations take and how do they reflect on our sense of self?
Practicing Representation in the Academy of Realist Art is an extended reflection on these questions. This diptych portrait series of students from the Academy of Realist Art juxtaposes their studio still life setups with a stark portrait of themselves. The series uses this arrangement to consider realist art as a genre of representation as a specific root of engaging with the world and how the constructed set both mirrors at multiple levels and mimics the conceptual and physical identities of the artist.
